The worlds most popular 3D print is a boat that doesn’t float.

  • Step 1 - Imitation

I recreated the “benchy” design from scratch first. This was during a phase which I challenged myself to learn new techniques by replicating designs. Then I modified the hull to increase bouyancy make the boat float.

  • Step 2 - Trick it out

Second iteration contained some stylish upgrades, but not much more. I had grand plans to create a print in place chain-and-anchor, but the overall design was far too small. Maybe someday I will print in 200% scale and I think the chain will work!

  • Step 3 - Fine tune benchmark goals

I began printing and upgrading more. Here we can see an iteration with extremely aggressive overhang testing (no supports).

I’ve also designed a version which will propel itself using a balloon attached to the smoke stack.
